"Oh Happy Day" Ladysmith Black Mambazo

Today I went to a church in the township, with singing and dancing at a level of exuberance I had never encountered. Amazing! This joyful gospel tune came to mind on my way out of the church.

"I Wanna Know Now" MGMT vs. Bob Marley

Thanks to MS, another one of the volunteers, for playing this pretty awesome Xaphoon Jones remix for me.

"Friday" Rebecca Black

I'm sorry, I just really couldn't help myself. Chances are you have already heard/seen this brain rotter, but if not, do enjoy.

"Thando Iwam (Marry Me)" Bojo Mujo

I found this song while looking for a different one. The original song still escapes me, but this one works.

"Meaning (Stripped)" Gavin DeGraw

The two Emelie/Emily's and I have full out sang this song on multiple occasions. The rest of the house may not be so thrilled, but I love it.

I've been wearing the same clothes for the past couple days while waiting for my laundry to be done. Monday can't arrive soon enough.

"I Don't Feel Like Dancin' " Scissor Sisters

This song made it into my iTunes library after a music swapping session with ES. Isn't music swapping the best?

"Drive" Cars

This song played while I was out with other volunteers and I had no choice but to sing along. My companions were simultaneously weirded out and impressed that I knew all of the words.

"Air on a G String" Johann Sebastian Bach

This song was used for meditation today when township children were preparing to draw and write about the monsters that haunt them. It was an emotional afternoon that will be a memory forever adhered to this classic(al tune).

"I Can't Dance" Genesis

I'm not sure how recently this actually happened, but I just read about Phil Collins' declaration of retirement. Here's a tribute to his legend.

"Woman to Woman" Shirley Brown

One of the project directors enjoys playing this song when were driving between locations. An assistant who we call Aysta (meaning iron man in Xhosa). Iron man indeed.

"End of the Road" Boyz II Men

The locals we work with at one of the volunteer projects put this song on repeat while we cleaned/organized a room for an hour. There are worse songs for such circumstances.

"Circle of Life" The Lion King

ES, on of the other Americans in the volunteer house starts most mornings by walking out onto the deck, throwing open her arms, and belting the start of this song. It's perfect, really.

"Only Girl (In The World)" Rihanna

I'm spending the next month in a volunteer house with ten girls! Today I was singing a parody version of this song to myself: "Only Guy (In This House)". Feel free to sing the new lyrics along too.

"Cough Syrup" Young the Giant

It's pretty easy to overload on Kwaito music. I find that interspersing it with dashes of your favorite genres makes it more palatable. (If I had listened to the whole "Y the G" album before posting a track in December, this would've been the one)

"Nelson Mandela" The Special A.K.A.

This song's chorus was ingrained in my head after visiting the Apartheid Museum. It's not a great song, but it is for a pretty great guy.

This cover depicts exactly how I would handle the Johannesburg heat, if only Joburg had beaches.

This song is dedicated to my good friend JV, who spent a couple hours of his Sunday helping me prove to South African Airways that I had been vaccinated for Yellow Fever. Thank you.

"Whip My Hair" Willow Smith

This song was heard today at the Cristo de Redentor statue. Jesus, despite Willow's insistence that he whip his hair, was unfazed. (Sorry this song is so terrible)

I never thought I would feature Barry Manilow on this blog, but this song was too obvious given Rio district MV and I are staying in.

En route to Rio de Janeiro I had a layover in Panama City. Though I didn't get to see the canal, I did get this song stuck in my head.

"Heal The World" Michael Jackson

Yesterday one of the lab techs asked me "Que dice en Espanol?", when this song came on the radio. Hopefully MJ's message was carried through in my attempted translation.

Today marks the first ever video on the blog! It should have been posted some time ago, but I finally found a place with fast enough wifi to get it uploaded. This was filmed on the streets of Aguas Calientes.

"The Hustle" Van McCoy

There's a joke going around the volunteers where we yell "Do the Ashley!", and then mimic the absurd dancing of one of the other volunteers. Don't worry, she's in on it.

"Starlight" Muse

On Friday some of the volunteers went and watched El Turista at the movie theater. The movie was in English with Spanish subtitles, but concentrating on the Spanish and feeling like I might be able to understand without the audio was cool. The movie itself was alright, but the use of this song in the credits was commendable.
